Our Story
It all started with just three of us strolling down 125th Street, handing out zip-top bags filled with sandwiches, hand sanitizer, socks, and a warm smile to make sure everyone had something to keep them warm and connected during the holidays. As we chatted with our neighbors, we realized that more was needed, so the bags soon expanded to include hats, gloves, and jackets, then thermal layers, hygiene kits, and anything else that could handle a harsh New York winter. And today, that simple act of kindness has blossomed into something incredible: half a city block each Thanksgiving is dedicated to clothing racks, a coffee-and-bagel bar, an art station, hygiene supply tables, and even sturdy bags and suitcases so people can carry their belongings safely.
Our Mission
While we continue to honor the tradition of bringing people together over a shared meal, our central mission has evolved. Today, we focus on providing seasonal clothing and essentials to individuals experiencing homelessness and hardship. Each year, as the weather turns cold, we supply warm coats, hats, scarves, and gloves—practical and uplifting gifts that remind our neighbors that they are seen, valued, and supported.
Nationwide Expansion
Though the name “Thanksgiving in Harlem” pays tribute to our origin, our reach now extends well beyond the boundaries of New York City. Partnering with local organizations and volunteers in cities nationwide, we’ve grown into a network of compassion. From Harlem to LA, from the Bronx to Asheville, from upstate NYC to Fairfield County, CT, we work tirelessly to bring comfort and community to those who need it most.
